Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,
Someone once brought a Granth to offer to Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj. The Granth was wrapped in a Punjabi newspaper. As the man handed the Granth over, he dropped the newspaper at Sant Ji Maharaj’s feet.
Sant Ji Maharaj immediately scolded the man and said “What is wrong with you? Are you blind?” The man was very confused as to what had happened and in his mind cast doubt. Sant Ji Maharaj repeated once more “Can you not see, are you blind?” The man had become even more confused. He was expecting praise for what he had offered and not being scolded. Sant Ji Maharaj told the man to think at what he had just done. Recollecting his thoughts the man realised that Sant Ji Maharaj had scolded him due to the fact that he had dropped the Punjabi newspaper at their feet. However the man could not identify the error in his ways and that what was so bad about dropping a Punjabi newspaper.
Sant Ji Maharaj explained – “What you refer to as Punjabi is not a mere language. Punjabi is Gurmukhi – the word of the Guru. These same letters are within Guru Sahib’s Baani and thus one should take extra care when handling written Gurmukhi.”
