True are the Teachings, and the Instructions of the Holy.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,

During Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj’s mission of kirtan (singing of spiritual hymns) and katha (spiritual discourse), there came a time when Sant Ji Maharaj was doing a divan (programme) at Patiala.

Sant Ji Maharaj

There was a lot of Sangat (congregation) present at the divan. As Sant Ji Maharaj was doing kirtan and joining the sangat with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, a drunken intoxicated man walked into the Darbar Hall and ripped the Rumala Sahib off of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj!

The sangat became unsettled and were looking up and down as to why Sant Ji Maharaj had not responded to the beadbi (disrespect).

The sangat quickly grappled the man and were about to get in the position to beat him up.

Then Sant Ji Maharaj told the sangat “What are you doing? Why are you grappling this man, leave him be!”
The sangat astonished replied, “Sant Ji, what is wrong with you? This man has done beadbi of our eternal Lord, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj, he deserves to be beaten, beaten to death!”

The sangat had forgotten the powers of Sant Ji Maharaj and for a moment had begun to doubt them. Sant Ji Maharaj replied, “How can you kill what is already dead? Let him be, as I’ve already said”
Confused and baffled, the sangat were left speechless, yet however they didn’t respond or question Sant Ji’s holy word, as they knew from previous experiences with Sant Ji Maharaj, that there was always a mystery, a hidden secret, a hidden teaching within Sant Ji’s holy words.

The sangat let the man go, yet however felt doubt in their minds that they had not got revenge. As the man left the premises, the divan continued as normal. A minority of the sangat followed the man to see where he was going. As soon as the man stepped outside and onto the road, he immediately met with an accident and died on the spot.

After the diwan, sangat apologised to Sant Ji Maharaj for doubting their bachan.

Like every story of Sant Ji Maharaj, or any story at all, people will always draw their own conclusions, learn their own specific lessons and draw their own morals. In my humble opinion, I believe the message from this story is that we should never take things into our own hands before consulting our Guru Sahib or a Sant Mahapurkh. Sant’s have given us specific teachings and commands for specific reasons. We don’t have the understanding to understand the hidden messages and hidden teaching within their holy words and so should pray to the almighty Lord, Waheguru and our eternal Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to bless us with the strength to be able to live up to these holy commands.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji states in the holy prayer of Sri Sukhmani Sahib:
ਉਤਮ ਸਲੋਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ||
The most sublime hymns are the Words of the Holy.

ਅਮੁਲੀਕ ਲਾਲ ਏਹਿ ਰਤਨ ||
These are priceless rubies and gems.

 Sometimes we take it upon ourselves to put other people down and punish them for their mistakes, without taking into consideration, the mistakes we make on a daily basis AND how we would want to be punished. It’s the duty of every Sikh to tell a fellow brother or sister where they have gone wrong, however it’s also the duty of every Sikh that before we give the punishment ourselves we consult a Sant Mahapurkh or our eternal Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

ਭੁਲਣ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ

Everyone makes mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible.

Please forgive us if we have made any mistakes…
