Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj (Rara Sahib Wale) once gave the following teachings regarding the importance of making Nitnem the first thing we do when we arise.
“If you drink something before having done your Nitnem – you are essentially drinking a glass of blood. If you eat something before having done your Nitnem – you are essentially eating a plate of excrement.”
The above Bachan of Sant Ji Maharaj highlights how Nitnem should be a Sikh’s priority. Everything else, whether it be our desires or responsibilities should never hold priority over our Nitnem. Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj (Nanaksar Kaleran Wale) used to say: “Carrying out Nitnem, is holding onto Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj’s arm.” It is reinforced often in Katha that a true form of conducting Nitnem, is doing so regardless of the circumstances. Whether your mind feels engaged or not and whether your body is well or not – Nitnem is that which is done without fail and exempt from this.
Sant Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale used to conduct 5 sets of the 5 Baani’aa on a daily basis. When asked by fellows as to why they do this, Sant Ji replied that we do 5 sets to make up for those days when we didn’t do our Nitnem when we were in childhood or illness.
