Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,
A Sant who went by the name of Sant Jeevan Singh Ji (Kar Seva Wale) was engaging in the construction of Gurdwara Dookh Nivaran Sahib (Patiala). Sant Jeevan Singh Ji (for a reason known to them alone) would always cover their face with a cloth. A drunkard known by the name of Waryam Singh approached Sant Jeevan Singh Ji and after abusing him, asked him in a rude manner as to why Sant Ji covers their face. Sant Jeevan Singh Ji (Kar Seva) didn’t reply. Waryam Singh then said again in a very rude manner: “Give me Darshan (blessed vision) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji! You refer yourself to as a Sant, prove it!” Sant Jeevan Singh Ji remained quiet.
Waryam Singh was an athiest with a communist ideology. He would always doubt religion and upon arriving at home, drink as much alcohol as possible! Sant Jeevan Singh Ji refused to give Waryam Singh darshan. It’s something to note, that one cannot achieve a university degree in any subject without studying the subject and taking exams. In the same way, we cannot expect Sikhi to be served on a plate and for us to achieve high spiritual stages without engaging in meditation. Sant Jeevan Singh Ji humbly replied – “There are a lot of Saints in the Sikh Panth, who all have different duties given to them by the Lord Waheguru. My duty is to construct Gurdwar’eh through Kar Seva. If you wish to have Darshan, you must go to Sant Ji Maharaj, Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji (Rara Sahib Wale). Gurdwara Karamsar, Rara Sahib is local to you.”
Waryam Singh returned home and in his mind cursed Sant Jeevan Singh Ji. Waryam Singh said to himself – “These foolish Saints take me for some fool, exchanging me amongst themselves as if I’ve got time to go each and every one.” Waryam Singh left his thoughts and began to drink alcohol. Waryam Singh was fully intoxicated. On that night, Waryam Singh was awoken by the sound of Sant Jeevan Singh Ji’s wooden shoes at 12AM. Waryam Singh was baffled. He could hear Sant Jeevan Singh Ji telling him to go to Rara Sahib if we wished to meet Guru Gobind Singh Jee. After some thought, Waryam Singh dismissed what had happened, and drew the conclusion that perhaps he had just had too much to drink.
The second day, Waryam Singh drank even more alcohol than the day before. The same happenings occurred and yet again, Waryam Singh dismissed it to his level of intoxication. The next day, Waryam Singh had drank even more alcohol than the previous two days! Again as it turned 12AM, Sant Jeevan Singh Ji arrived and reminded Waryam Singh that if he wished to see Guru Gobind Singh Ji, he would have to go to Rara Sahib. Immediately Sant Jeevan Singh Ji began to ascend as though they were going to Sachkhand! Upon seeing this, Waryam Singh immediately came out of his drunken state of mind and was experiencing an intense level of shock!
Rara Sahib was only 12 kilo-metres from Waryam Singh’s house. Waryam Singh told all his family members that he had now given up alcohol and upon bathing would immediately go to Rara Sahib. Waryam Singh’s family did not believe one word he said and feared for his safety. They attempted to lock the front gate of the house as they were in fear that perhaps Waryam Singh will become drunk and cause harm to himself. However, Waryam Singh insisted on leaving. After bathing, Waryam Singh arrived at Rara Sahib.
Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj had just finished their Nitnem. The Bhora Sahib had not yet been constructed and Sant Ji Maharaj was sitting on the roof top. Waryam Singh requested to see Sant Ji Maharaj. The Jatha Singhs of Sant Ji Maharaj insisted they would let him but only after approval. The Singh asked Sant Ji Maharaj to which Sant Ji Maharaj replied- “He has not come to meet me, I have been waiting for him myself, bring him here immediately.”
Waryam Singh fell at Sant Ji Maharaj’s feet. Sant Ji Maharaj then said to him – “You say you wish to have Darshan of the 10th Guru, yet you troubled Sant Jeevan Singh Ji for 3 days!? Are you sure you want Darshan? If you want Darshan, take Amrit and do Seva. You will get Darshan of Maharaj.”
From this day, Waryam Singh took Amrit and done 12 years of long intense Seva. After 12 years, Waryam Singh met Sant Ji Maharaj at a Kirtan Divaan in Delhi. Sant Ji Maharaj was very happy to see him. After Waryam Singh had bowed in Sant Ji Maharaj’s feet, Sant Ji Maharaj asked – “You have followed my Bachan and have proved yourself Waryam Singh. Now tell me, whose Darshan do you wish to have? Guru Nanak Dev Ji or Guru Gobind Singh Ji?” To which Waryam Singh replied – “Sant Ji Maharaj, I no longer have a thirst to have Darshan of the 10th Guru. I now experience the Guru’s Darshan when I see you Baba Ji!”
As narrated by Sant Baba Mann Singh Ji (Pehowa Wale) throughout Sant Ji Maharaj’s whole life, although Sant Ji Maharaj were capable of punishing all those that were against him and committed sins. However, Sant Ji Maharaj had so much love and grace within them, that they never punished anyone. All those that came were treated with love and even the slanderers of Sant Ji Maharaj were saved under their grace.
Please forgive us for any mistakes.
