Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,
The following is a short Bachan Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj (Rara Sahib Wale) gave in regards to the character of an individual who conducts Seva at the Gurdwara:
Sant Ji Maharaj stated – “One who wishes to partake in Seva at the Gurdwara should disregard two things. Firstly he should disregard his clothing – (he shouldn’t worry about the state of his clothes, when conducting Seva one isn’t there to impress anyone else. Sant Baba Mohan Singh Ji (Langaran Wale) once gave a practical example from their own Jeevan. They explained that when conducted Seva of the SaadhSangat’s used utensils, their clothes would become dirty and stained. Langaran Wale Baba Ji reinforced Sant Ji Maharaj’s Bachan in this sense and said one shouldn’t worry what becomes of their clothes, but to focus solemnly on conducting their Seva correctly.)
An individual is also to not be choosy about what he eats. (This is not to say that one isn’t to eat at the Gurdwara as that would undermine the whole concept of the Langar. What this Bachan implies is that just as one shouldn’t worry about their physical appearance, one shouldn’t worry about eating the tastiest dish and have their solemn focus on food. What is more important is that Langar is consumed as a blessing. There have been instances where individuals seek certain qualities in the Langar and even go as far as criticising what is ‘Guru-Ka-Langar’. Sant Ji Maharaj explains to us that this is not the ideal mindset and instead one should humbly consume whatever they receive.
Please forgive us for any mistakes in interpreting Sant Ji Maharaj’s blessed Bachan.
