Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,
Sardar Najar Singh of Sham Churasi (Near Hoshiarpur in Punjab) had a huge alcohol problem. Before meeting Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj (Rara Sahib Wale), Najar Singh wasn’t married. He had given the land he owned on rent and alongside a few of his friends, would remain enticed in alcohol day and night. Najar Singh admitted that he himself drank 5 bottles of alcohol a day for 30 odd years and the amount of alcohol he had given to others was uncountable. At all times Najar Singh would have an approximate of 150 bottles stored in his house and would eat excessive amounts of meat. However, despite having such an obsessive problem with alcohol, he was cured with the grace of Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj. His story is as follows:
In 1968, Najar Singh found himself trapped in a murder case. Avtar Singh of Sham Churasi had connections in Ludhiana that may have perhaps helped Najar Singh receive a lighter sentence, however the officer that Avtar Singh knew, was on break at that given time. Having no other source for hope, Najar Singh went to a Divaan of Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj’s – and that was it. Najar Singh’s heart was won over by Sant Ji Maharaj – by simply spending a small amount of time listening to Kirtan and Katha from their mouth – he devoted himself to them forever.
The next day he arrived at Gurdwara Karamsar Rara Sahib and fell at Sant Ji Maharaj’s feet as they were sitting on their chair. Najar Singh begged for Naam Di Daat after which Sant Ji Maharaj advised Najar Singh to first give up on consuming meat and alcohol. Najar Singh accepted the Bachan and said: “It is not in my hands to stop doing these sins, only if you bless me with your grace will I be able to overcome such negativity.”
Sant Ji Maharaj faced him and said: “If you won’t be able to stop yourself, then I certainly will!”
Despite all of this, Najar Singh went home and as had been his daily routine, he drank a large amount of alcohol and lay down. However this time a voice echoed in Najar Singh’s mind. The voice told him: “This is not good for you. You made a promise in Guru Darbar to abstain from these bad actions – it is advisable for you to stick to your word…” Najar Singh ignored this voice and carried on doing his normal actions.
Then, Najar Singh attended all Divaans in Sham Churasi, Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar. He would do Seva with his hands and with money. Later on, Najar Singh arrived at Rara Sahib alongside Avtar Singh. Sant Ji Maharaj turned to Najar Singh and said: “Has your thirst for this bitter water not been fulfilled yet? You need to stop now, it has been too long. You need to commit yourself to giving up alcohol for good!”
Najar Singh joined his hands and begged for Kirpa. Sant Ji Maharaj accepted and told him to come nearer. Sant Ji Maharaj then placed their right hand thumb on his forehead and said – “Some of your bad Karams that push you towards drinking alcohol have been erased. In order to overcome this problem you must take Khande-Batte-Da-Amrit. You must strive for become intoxicated on Naam – then you will experience such a bliss that will never fade.”
On the 13th of April 1970, Sardar Najar Singh was blessed with Amrit-Di-Daat and initiated into the Khalsa Panth.
