Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Jio,

The following is an extract from a Kirtan by Sant Baba Waryam Singh Ji (Ratwara Sahib Wale):

Sant Baba Waryam Singh Ji once asked Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Maharaj (Rara Sahib Wale) about how Sant Ji Maharaj first began on the Sikh path and how they obtained the understanding of life.

Sant Ji Maharaj explained that their life changed when they were studying in the 6th or 7th grade at school in Patiala. Sant Ji Maharaj’s family was very wealthy and so Sant Ji Maharaj attended a top ranking school alongside many other rich families. Sant Ji Maharaj’s cousin (who was son to their aunt) was in charge of the ‘Lassi Khana’ to Sardar Dalip Singh and so Sant Ji Maharaj was regularly in company with other royalty, army officers and generally rich people.

Sant Ji Maharaj explained that their teacher, Professor T.L. Vishvani once told the whole class that it is very important for a Sikh to know Sri Japji Sahib off by heart. Upon hearing this, Sant Ji Maharaj memorised Sri Japji Sahib in 2-3 days and also began reading Sri Sukhmani Sahib. At the age of 12, Sant Ji Maharaj would arise at 1:30AM and carry out their Nitnem. There was a small Sarovar at ‘Sudha-Sar’ where Sant Ji Maharaj would have an Ishnaan. Sant Ji Maharaj explained that they had heard that to be classified as a ‘Sadhu’ it was important to have a ‘Smaadhi’ of 5 hours and so Sant Ji Maharaj’s intentions were rearing towards intense meditation at this tender age.

Sant Ji Maharaj began at that point doing 5 Sri Sukhmani Sahib’s a day and explained that they would do 4 in one hour (1 every 15 minutes). Sant Baba Waryam Singh Ji explained that at this stage, Sant Ji Maharaj would do Gurbani with their ‘Surati’. After doing 5 Sri Sukhmani Sahib Jaaps, Sant Ji Maharaj would then do ‘Waheguru Simran’ and would be in such a state of peace, that they felt they were sitting in the clouds and they would see bright lights all around them. In those 5 hours, Sant Ji Maharaj explained that they had no idea as to where they were – such was the state of peace that they experienced.

After seeing this, Sant Ji Maharaj’s parents became very worried about their son’s education and questioned how Sant Ji Maharaj could possibly study with such a minimal amount of sleep. Upon hearing this, Sardar Dalip Singh ordered for Sant Ji Maharaj’s room to be locked to ensure that under no circumstances they were allowed to escape. However, despite all these obstacles, Sant Ji Maharaj woke at 1:30AM, had an Ishnaan and sat in the staircase of the home to do their Nitnem. Sardar Dalip Singh coincidentally was leaving their room at that time and upon walking down the stairs bumped into Sant Ji Maharaj.

Upon discovering Sant Ji Maharaj, Sant Dalip Singh asked them what they were doing sitting in the staircase. Sant Ji Maharaj explained that they were doing their Nitnem and that it was impossible for them to sleep after 1:30AM. Sardar Dalip Singh understood what he was seeing and said: “I thought that perhaps because of your age it wasn’t appropriate for you to do so much meditation. I thought that perhaps I may be able to stop you from doing so. However, after seeing your dedication today, I can see that you have been sent to this earth specifically to do meditation and that you will join many individuals with the Sikh path. I will not stop you from now on…”

Please forgive us for any mistakes
